WebFirst Site Description:

The Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics (KCIA) is a panel of members of the American academic, athletic and journalism communities, with an eye toward reform of college athletics, particularly in regard to emphasizing academic values and policies that ensure athletic programs operate within the educational missions of their universities.

Objective:
KCIA engaged WebFirst to create a web-based tool to allow public access to academic and athletic data, which will be easily analyzed and visualized by the public and policy makers.

Solution:
Our team responded by developing a site that is attractive and professional with visually engaging charts and maps, allowing users to browse data more effectively. All of this was accomplished using open source tools such as Drupal 7. Drupal was selected because it is a solid platform which enables extensive integration and customization and allows for easy content management and administration. Drupal saved us time and costs by providing us with a solid foundation and basic building blocks to create this site.

The application enables users to:
Access institution-specific cross-sectional data annually, as well as changes over time such as “Total institutional support for athletics on a per athlete basis.”
Access medians for each subdivision (FBS, FCS, DI - no football) and each of the 11 FBS athletic conferences.
Compare institutional data to applicable groups (i.e. states or regions, Carnegie classifications, athletic conferences, privates/publics)
Access trend data for rate of change over time in total athletics revenues and expenses
Download pre-defined and custom reports, as well as data from tables and charts, into Microsoft Excel, PDF, or web-based files.

Technologies used: Data visualization with Highcharts and custom code using html5/canvas, Drupal, PHP, MySQL, HTML/CSS

OHO Interactive Site Description:

In redesigning their website, St John’s sought to address a number of issues that were creating complexities in the day-to-day site administration and in the user experience for prospective and current students, as well as the larger University community:

-The site was relying on an eight year-old content management tool that offered a cumbersome and time consuming process for site management
-A confusing information architecture made navigating the website difficult and provided a poor user experience in which site visitors couldn’t find the information they were seeking
-The site was not addressing the needs of site visitors using mobile devices as it was built for viewing only on desktops

OHO worked with the St. John's digital team to address each of these priorities for the site redesign.

User Experience Design
The website’s information architecture needed a complete overhaul. OHO focused on creating a structure that would make sense to internal and external audiences, allowing them to easily find the information they needed. Using analytics data, we created new wireframes and a prototype that ensures the user experience of the new site is vastly improved and offers a clear and intuitive navigation.

Responsive Design
With the massive growth of users accessing websites using tablets and mobile devices, it was important to create a site that provides an optimized mobile experience. The new site has a responsive design that includes breakpoints for desktop, horizontal and vertical tablet screens, and mobile.

Content Management System Development
The digital team at St. John’s wanted a new content management system that would be easy-to-use and would streamline the process of posting new content. OHO built the new website in Drupal7, which offers a better security model for permissioning and revision tracking than their previous CMS.

The Results
With the launch of the new website, St. John’s was confident that people visiting their site as a result of the national advertising campaign would find a great digital experience both on desktop and mobile. Improving the overall user experience plays a key factor in increasing key performance indicators such as time spent on site, pages viewed, and most importantly, conversions.

Rush University Medical Center Site Description:

Challenge
Like many academic medical centers, Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center had a website overly influenced by its organizational structure. Juggling competing priorities and tiptoeing around internal politics often got in the way of effective communication with the Medical Center’s most important audience: patients. CentreTEK partnered with Rush to reinvent its digital strategy and website to offer a truly patient-centric online experience. Our approach outlined below pivots the website focus from traditional organizational focused content display to an experience designed to expand brand awareness, engage users through meaningful content rich conversion paths and activate them with strategically minded calls to action, tools, landing pages, social integration and integrated digital campaigns. The end result is a digital presence capable of guiding a user from awareness through conversion and a platform that allows the Medical Center to amplify its reach, resonance and conversion goals.

Our Approach

CentreTEK recently led the website redesign, CMS implementation, and larger digital strategy for Rush University Medical Center (launched in September 2014). Our work included:
• Defining organizational and website goals and objectives.
• Analyzing and prioritizing target audiences.
• Implemented a plan for creating optimized landing pages for key departments and services.
• Defining key performance indicators, conversion paths and measures of success.
• Stakeholder and audience interviews.
• Website usage patterns and analytics review.
• SEO analysis and strategy.
• Content and messaging strategy, governance modeling, and training.
• Content migration and site build out.
• Usability testing.
• Information architecture – inventory, reverse card sorting, sitemaps and wireframes.
• Creative design (including responsive design)
• Implemented their new website built on the Drupal CMS platform.
• Custom theming and module development.
• Drupal performance tuning (e.g. caching tools and techniques)
• Drupal training

Results

The new Rush University Medical Center website sets the bar for what innovative, patient-centric healthcare looks like on the Web. Highlights include:
• Fully responsive design
• Streamlined information architecture, navigation and calls to action to drive increased conversions
• The site uses a robust taxonomy scheme to cross-promote and inter-relate content across the website.
• The website integrates with multiple third-party systems and data sources including an external Physician Directory.
• Custom treatments and conditions content developed by Rush and our team.
• Solr search implementation with real-time, predictive and phonetic search with faceted filtering. This is a seriously smart search. Try misspelling something like “dyabeates.”
• Custom video library - http://www.rush.edu/health-wellness/video-library
• Custom interactive map and virtual tour - http://www.rush.edu/interactive-map

As Rush’s digital partner, CentreTEK provides ongoing strategy, creative, and technical consulting services on a regular basis. We our currently helping Rush execute a number of integrated marketing campaigns and digital initiatives.
